Lubbe & Sons (Bulbs) Ltd.
Originally being a farmer with a passion for breeding new varieties
of Daffodils, around 1900 the 23 year old George Lubbe made the
successful “cross” that resulted in the seedling of
the variety Actaea. This new variety gave him the opportunity, and
enthusiasm to start breeding more varieties, and the base of being
a commercial bulb grower and breeder was founded.
After this magnificent new variety “Actaea”, which
is still commercially grown today, many new varieties followed,
including Scarlet Royal, Holland Sensation, Unsurpassable, and Rembrandt,
to name but a few.
Eventually his son joined the business, and he started to travel
in the UK as well as in Holland to promote and sell their own varieties.
In those days, there were many small flower growers in and around
the Spalding area of Lincolnshire, who were interested in growing
these new varieties of Daffodils, and from those beginnings, the
trade spread over the whole of the UK. During the following years,
both the second and the third generation of the Lubbe family developed
the business, progressing from trade with commercial bulb growers
into importing and exporting bulbs, and supplying many Local Authorities,
Commercial Landscapers, and Stately Homes.
Today, the fourth generation is building on these strong foundations.
We are still working tirelessly to promote the use of bulbs in the
landscape. This has been helped by the development of our mechanical
bulb planting machine, and the subsequent use of many varied mixtures
that we have created, as we strive to meet the flowering demands
of our discerning clients.
